Overview

This circuit through the Maroil countryside is accessible all year round. Small country roads and paths
of land follow one another to discover the remarkable farms of the Helpe Minore valley.

Registered with the PDIPR

Because to be able to hike, you need suitable paths, the Nord department relies on a concrete tool: the Departmental Plan for Walking and Hiking Routes (PDIPR). In technical terms, the PDIPR aims to promote the discovery of natural sites and rural landscapes through the practice of hiking, by guaranteeing the continuity of the routes and ensuring the conservation of the heritage that constitutes rural paths. In other words, this plan governs the development, management and preservation of the 6000 kilometers of trails and 360 hiking trails in the North.

The Memorial step by step

Parking: Maison du Parc, Maroilles.
(D/A) Leave the abbey courtyard and head towards the town hall. Cross at the pedestrian crossing then turn left into Rue du Lieutenant towards Moulin des Prés.
(1) Just before the Croix-Robosse bridge and the mill, turn right into Rue Dame Marguerite. This alley, followed for approximately 3km, was an old road redeveloped and maintained in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries under Margaret of Austria, governess of the Netherlands. It is part of the old strategic road linking Avesnes-sur-Helpe to Le-Cateau-Cambrésis. On your left flows the canalized Sambre with the Mormal state-owned massif in the background.
(2) Make a right-left turn on the RD32 (caution) continue on the lane which becomes a path.
(3) At the intersection, continue straight. After the Bois Brun farm, and a bend on the right, leave the straight road on the left towards Renaud Folie – former abbey farm, birthplace of the painter Marcel Gromaire and go straight on.
(4) At Basses Noyelles, take the RD959 on the right for 200m (be careful) then turn right onto Rue des Haies. Note the blue stone chapels characteristic of Avesnois.
(5) After the campsite, turn left onto Ruelle du Breton. From this high point, behind, panorama of the Mormal forest. Make a right-left turn on the RD959 (be careful) and join the RD962 via the path.
(6) Follow the RD962 on the left for 200m (be careful) then go down the alley to the right.
(7) Turn right and, at the next intersection, continue left onto Rue du Faux. Come across some traditional “L”-shaped farms with storefronts. On certain old houses, note above the entrance door very beautiful cut and dated stones generally with the three letters IHS (Iesus Hominum Salvator: Jesus savior of Men).
(8) Follow Rue du Marais on the right. Immediately on the left is the building of an old tannery which operated until the last war. In the street, viewpoint over the Helpe Minore valley.
At the crossroads (on the right you have the Place Verte – triumphal arch, kiosk) turn left Chemin de la petite marlière to go down towards Helpe, cross the pasture (don't forget to close the small barriers for the animals) then go back left towards the church.
(9) Go down to the left and reach the Maison du Parc (D/A).
